5 Florida Fun Facts

Wise choices create the outcomes we desire.

Just thought I’d share 5 fun facts about my wonderful state — Florida.

  1. Saint Augustine, FL is the oldest European settlement in North America.

St. Augustine, established in 1565, is a beautiful, quaint, little town filled with history. Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the U.S., made of coquina shells.

It’s also the home of Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth.  :)

2. Orlando attracts more visitors than any other amusement park destination in the United States.

With Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, and Sea World, would you expect some other city to hold this title?

3. New England Congregationalists who sought to bring their style of liberal arts education to the state founded Rollins College, the oldest college in Florida, in Winter Park in 1885.

I did not attend Rollins College, but that doesn’t stop me from appreciating it’s beauty on the shores of Lake Virginia in Winter Park.

4. Gatorade was named for the University of Florida Gators where the drink was first developed.

Can you imagine if it had been invented at one of the other major universities? Caneade? Noleade? Bullade? hhmmmm I guess it’s a good thing it was invented at UF.

5. The St. Johns River is one of the few rivers that flows north instead of south.

Of course, there are a ton of fun facts about Florida, as there are about every place. Even more fun was that I learned a few new things about my wonderful state.

Great list of things about Florida – some I knew and some I didn’t. I’m hoping to one day (when the kiddos are old enough) to visit Disney World!!! We have a savings fun specifically for that!!

    Stay fabulous,

      Seng,

Thank you for the comment. You are smart to wait for the children to be old enough to enjoy it. I often see people stand in line with infants who will have no memories of Disney. I’ve even talked to adults who say there were there as tiny babies, but it’s their first trip back, so it’s really their first trip.

And, I’ve heard blood curdling screams from 2-year-olds who wanted to see their favorite character BEFORE they realized how BIG that mouse or chipmunk was.

I don’t know how old your children are, but based on my observations, 5 and above is when they really enjoy it.

Good luck. Have fun when you get there.

Nice post. Hmm. Something interesting. Philippines has 7107 islands, there’s a lot to travel to. Streets on my town are named based on Astronomy. I was going to my friend’s house and I told the driver to take me to Mars.

Wow! Thanks for the comment. I had no idea there were so many islands as part of the Philippines. I only thought it was a few. That is amazing.

And, I love the idea of saying, “Take me to Mars.” That must make you smile. It made me smile. Thanks, again.
